Welcome to the Gary R. Fellows Training Academy. This academy was developed to help effectively meet the fire training needs of our area and the instructional program is designed to teach students the basic knowledge and skills needed to excel in the field of firefighting. The school is named posthumously for Gary R. Fellows, an Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame instructor who taught for over forty years in the Ohio Valley and who was instrumental in the fire service training and career of many area firefighters.
The 36 Basic Firefighter course required by the state of Ohio for all new volunteer firefighters. This course is an introductory course in the areas of basic fire safety and support operations. Minimum age requirement is 18 years of age. Individuals may be admitted who are 17 years of age, who have graduated or are enrolled in their senior year of high school.
The 176 hour firefighting course covers basic firefighting concepts and skills. Training in safety, fire behavior, suppression, fire equipment, building construction, and rescue are covered in this course. Upon successful completion of this course students will be eligible to test for Firefighter I certification and be trained for an entry-level position in firefighting. Tablet computer and books are included in the cost.
The 124 hour transition course is designed to transition from a Volunteer Firefighter to the level of Firefighter I.Students will participate in classroom as well as practical skills instruction. Areas of study include safety, fire
behavior, suppression, fire equipment, building construction, rescue, and more. Prerequisite: Volunteer Firefighter certification. Tablet computer and books are included in the cost.
The 84 hour course to is required to transition from Firefighter Level I to Firefighter Level II. This course builds off of Firefighter I concepts in addition to more specialized areas of study. Students will study vehicle
operations, hazardous materials, fire control, rescue, operations, incident command, and inspections. Prerequisite:Firefighter Level I certification
60 hour course designed for those who wish to become a Certified in the State of Ohio as a Fire Instructor. This course complies with NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications. Students must have 5 years of experience in the fire service and pass the knowledge exam with an 80%. In addition, students must complete student teaching requirements and pass the division of EMS Instructor techniques examination. Books are included in the cost.
This three-day advanced training course is for certified fire instructors who want to facilitate a live burn training exercise per NFPA 1403 Live Burn Training. It will encompass a classroom session for NFPA 1403 standards and live fire scenarios at a mobile fire training unit, along with an acquired structure burn with students filling the role of lead instructor, ignition, safety, accountability and crew leaders.
This 80 hour course is designed to meet the requirements for State of Ohio Fire Safety Inspector. This class meets certification requirements established by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and NFPA 1031, Fire Inspector Professional Qualifications. Books are included in the cost.
Proper operation of an emergency vehicle is critical for emergency service providers. This 16 hour course is designed to enhance safe vehicle operation by stressing theory and principles of defensive driving both in emergency and non-emergency situations. The course includes hands on driving exercises designed to enhance the participant’s ability to operate a vehicle during emergency situation. This course is REQUIRED to qualify for Ohio Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications.
This 80 hour course prepares the line fire officer or aspiring firefighter to perform their job duties by giving them knowledge and skills needed to: understand leadership and management theories, lead a team, understand community relations and risk reduction, understand and perform pre-incident planning and code enforcement, command initial emergency operations and understand safety and risk management. Books are included in the cost.
